Northern Silver Screen
The concept behind the Northern Silver Screen is to use film as a succinct & engaging media for sharing information within the Consortium's membership.
We have now hosted our successful Northern Silver Screen initiative four times!
Northern Silver Screen 2011 - Big Society in Action
Much has been made of what Big Society actually represents, whether it is realistic as a concept, and how successful it can really be in tackling deep-roooted social problems. From a housing perspective, there has been a huge amount of discussion about why this is being promoted as something new, with many housing providers feeling that Big Society is something that they have been routinely delivering for several years.
To demonstrate the role housing is already undertaking in delivering the objectives of Big Society, we decided to focus the Northern Silver Screen competition on the following categories:
-
Best example of a social enterprise
-
Best example of community activism
-
Best example of a multi-agency approach
We looked for examples of work that are truly innovative and inspiring, and that can demonstrate having made a real difference to people's lives.
The winners in each category were:
|
Best example of a social enterprise |
Together Housing Group |
|
Best example of community activism |
Harvest Housing |
|
Best example of a multi-agency approach
|
City of Bradford Council |

Previous competitions....
Northern Silver Screen I
The first initiative was designed to demonstrate current examples of excellent housing and community initiatives. The films which were first showcased at the Northern Housing Summit 2008, were brought together under the Consortium's four work themes to cover a wide variety of topics ranging from a scheme for young mothers to a green travel policy.
Northern Silver Screen II
Following the success of Northern Silver Screen I, the Consortium decided to run the initiative again, however this year we focused the range of short films upon age friendly communities and age inclusive communities in support of our eagerly awaited project 'Age Friendly Communities in the North: People and Place 2020'.
In order to compile the films we invited Members to submit proposals surrounding; intergenerational initiatives, innovative approaches to tackling the ageing challenge and building strong links with health and social care. We then selected the winners and assisted with the filming, funding and/or editing of the submissions.
The winners of Northern Silver Screen II were shown at the Age Friendly Communities in the North: People and Place 2020 event, 26th January, York Racecourse.
Northern Silver Screen III
This year the films submitted for the Northern Silver Screen demonstrated innovation and good practice within the categories of Low Carbon, Localism and Big Society. We decided upon these categories following consultation with Members which indicated that, as these themes are very much the priorities for the Coalition Government it was important to reflect the positive practice being undertaken in the North in a way which was consistent with this.
The winners of the Northern Silver Screen III were announced at our Northern Housing Summit, 23rd November 2010.
And the winners were....
-
Low Carbon - Knowsley Housing Trust, Planet Knowsley
-
Localism - Airport Group, Pathways to Work and Training
-
Big Society - Sadeh Lok, Up and Working
-
Overall winner - Airport Group, Pathways to Work and Training
